Hello my quiet little community! How have we all been!? Facebook taking over our lives and keeping us from Livejournal!? Or have we all just been out there *points at big scary world outside the window*
Anyway, so question for you all - Yesterday I was listening to "Manhole" which is just ... ugh, speaks to me on so many levels! I got to my favorite line "But you can't fool the queen baby cause I married the king" and I heard it with new ears for the first time ... How do you take that line?
I used to hear it as if she was saying "Just because you're the best at what you do does not mean you can fool me because after all, I'm the best at what I do!" or something close to that and I LOVED the thought of that line ... but yesterday I heard it as "Just because I married you (King) does not mean you can fool me (Queen)" ... or something like that
(Forgive I'm in a rush to get out the door and have hardly any coffee in me yet)
How do you take this line? Any other lines/songs that seem different to you after many listens?
Jan. 30th, 2012 @ 11:37 am ¿Album?
So, whatcha think of the new album?
I don't like the electric guitar but it's good otherwise. She's definitely changed, the whole album has a very settled feel to it. To me at least. I can't help but think she's close to "quitting"-"...don't think me wrong if I quit your spotlight..." and "...I don't want to strive for nothing anymore/I just want to lie here with you..." are a few lyrics that make me wonder but then these songs are "old" so what do I know?
How has she been live? I haven't seen her in a couple years...

How Have You Been: sleepy
Jukebox: "life boat" in my head
EDIT: ALL CODES HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED
i preordered ani's new album, and rbr sent me some codes to stream it before it comes out next week. i have 3 left and thought someone here might be interested. the official instructions are below. i was listening to it last night and just tried again a minute ago and can't get back in, so the 'one use' thing is legit. (i'm guessing if you leave your browser open for days you'd still be able to listen, but i turn my computer off at night so i couldn't tell ya for sure.) if you'd like a code, let me know and i'll reply with one until i run out.
this page has lyrics to promiscuity, splinter, and life boat [listed as 'tired old face'] at the top under unreleased.
Please visit http://whichside.net and enter your unique code. The album will be available to preview until Monday, Jan 16th.
Please note that each unique code is only one use/one browser, and cookies must be enabled.

Jan. 16th, 2011 @ 11:56 pm Nature/Earth
Do you have any quotes/sayings from Ani that you like based on the Earth and/or nature in general?
Oct. 10th, 2010 @ 02:15 pm Just wonderin.
I am watching older youtube vids of Ani, and I think she looked super sexy when she had her nose ring. Has she ever said why she took it out?

I'm posting because I have a group project due for social problems. Our group's topic is poverty. My specific assignment involves the media, and one of the questions asks if there are any songs about it. So, my first thought was Ani.
Sadly, my music collection isn't with me and so I don't really recall which songs would be good for this assignment.
Please, what Ani songs are mainly about poverty?
Sep. 12th, 2010 @ 10:37 pm something just for fun
Sooo... its been pretty quiet in here huh?
Well, a couple of years ago (possibly more than that) I was trying to learn a new stringed instrument called an Oud (google it if you want). I was dicking around one day and I discovered I could kind of etch out "Little Plastic Castle" which I kind of found interesting. I toyed with the idea of posting it here, but never got around to it. Well, I finally got it all uploaded and I'm making that idea a reality.
Its riddled with mess-ups and fail quality sound recording, but bear with me.
EDIT: Sorry guys, had it set to be private. Should work now!!!!
(Just click on the quicktime bar play button to listen, sorry for having such a ghetto method of uploading the file. I'm too lazy to figure out better ways to get audio files up on the interbuttz. Suggestions are appreciated.)
Let me know what you think!

May. 12th, 2010 @ 03:15 pm ANI JOINS LENNY KRAVITZ, MOS DEF AND MORE FOR “GULF AID” IN NEW ORLEANS THIS SUNDAY
A long list of incredible musicians, including Ani DiFranco, are donating their talents to "Gulf Aid" this Sunday, May 16 from 12noon to 10pm at Mardi Gras World River City in New Orleans. Ani joins Lenny Kravitz, Mos Def, Allen Toussaint, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many more in a benefit concert organized by WWOZ’s David Freedman and pianist David Torkanowsky, raising money to help efforts to contain the BP oil spill, one of the largest oil spills in history. Tickets are $50, available here, and all proceeds go to Gulf Aid, a 501(c3) nonprofit corporation, who will distribute the funds to organizations to help protect the wetlands, as well as for fishermen and their families.
For folks outside of the New Orleans area, WWOZ plans a live broadcast; details to be posted on their website here. Donations can be sent to: Gulf Relief Foundation, PO Box 6917, Metairie, LA 70009.

Jukebox: Dar Williams "The Tide Falls Away"
This link states the new album is 80 percent done. Apparently, she plans to tour a lot less.

Mar. 8th, 2010 @ 08:13 pm Trip down memory lane
A friend of mine linked me to a plethora of old copies of Spin Magazine on Google Books. I thought I'd link the comm to the August 1997 issue, which features Ani on the cover in case you missed the first time around or no longer have your copy. The article starts on page 54 and goes on for a few pages and continues on page 126. Enjoy!
Mar. 7th, 2010 @ 02:16 pm Ani in Chattanooga
I had the huge pleasure of going to Ani last night at Rhythm and Brews, a small bar/concert venue here in Chattanooga. I didn't find out about the concert until Monday when I got a tour date card in the mail. I freaked out immediately. After much worrying about money and begging on Facebook, my mom ended up buying tickets for my sister and me as early birthday presents. My sister had never seen Ani live before and had really only heard a few songs. She basically went so we could have a girls' night out, which is something we never do.
Erin McKeown was the opening act and she was really good, but I did want to slap some chatty Cathys upside the head (if one of you is reading this, well now you know). We were sitting in the upper balcony and the acoustics were not that great in that spot. The concert was sold out, though and we were packed in like sardines. The upper balcony was really best for my claustrophobic self.
Anyway, when Ani came on and went straight into "Shy" the place came alive and everyone was singing along. I was in heaven. By the end of the night when she played "Evolve" and "Overlap" (with Erin) I was in some other place. I'm sure everyone who has seen her live, especially in a small venue, has felt that way. I danced and sang along and it was amazing.
I do have a favor to ask of the community, she played a new song (a couple of them actually), but one that was just really amazing. It was about the women's movement and had lines like "if you don't like abortion, don't have an abortion" and "our differences do not make us less" or something like that. I could only make out half of it, but the beat was sick and the bass blew my mind. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? And if you do, do you know the title and if there are YouTube videos of her performing it at other places? I really hope it's on the next album; she said she's been working on it for a year.
I'd give you the setlist, but I can't remember the order so here's the songs I do remember: Shy, Lagtime, Gravel, Present Infant, 78% Water, Evolve, Overlap, Manhole and fuck I can't remember the rest. I do think I may have seen someone recording on their iPhone, so I'm hoping some of these will go up on YT or something. I had brought a camera, but my sister left it in the glove compartment in my car.
ETA: I just remembered that she played "Fuel."
Mar. 3rd, 2010 @ 05:37 pm Albacore
Jukebox: Ani Difranco - Albacore
I love this video. I love the look to it - it just seems so heightened and emotional. Can anyone on here play it yet? If so what are the chords and their order ?
Mar. 1st, 2010 @ 10:33 pm Ani on Obama now..
Jukebox: Ani - Smiling Underneath
I have been watching all these interviews of Ani on youtube.. all the recent ones are from 2008. Does anyone have any links to interviews about how he feels about Obama now. I just google newsed her and found an interview where she was talking about New Orleans and Haiti and I sensed she is not very happy with this administration anymore. But I don't know that for sure. Google news only wants to show me concert reviews for the most part. Do any of you know what her stance is now??

So Ani has been on the road recently, and I know a bunch of you have been to some of the shows, I think if anyone has pictures/videos/set lists/good stories we should all post it here! I went to the Buffalo Show earlier this month and it was the first I had time to catch in awhile.

Feb. 24th, 2010 @ 01:29 pm Ani Gifs
How Have You Been: creative
I cannot find a single gif of Ani on the internet. None! Is there anyone in this community that might share w/ me some they've created or have come across? Thanks!
Feb. 2nd, 2010 @ 11:48 pm 2 tickets to Ani @ Asbury Hall up for grabs!
I'm in Toronto and as it turns out I can't make this trip to Buffalo next week, so sadly, I'm looking for a good home for two tickets to Ani at Babeville on Feb 8th 2010 at 7 PM. I'm just looking to make face-value back on them - $32.50 USD each.
Any Canadians interested in picking these up on their way south of the border? Leave me a note here or e-mail me at christelreid at gmail dot com.

Jan. 3rd, 2010 @ 10:44 pm ARGH.
Last night I managed to delete every mp3 from my music folder. And then emptied my recycle bin before I realized it. (CRAP, to say the least!)
I realize now I'm going to have to rebuild the whole folder of songs that I didn't have on any hard copy. Or backed up. I'm fine with that. BUT I had a few rare Ani songs that I have reaaally searched for today and can't find anywhere! The versions I'm looking for are from the same live performance from back in the 90s. (The whole concert used to be on youtube, but has been taken down for ages, so the only thing I remember about the concert is that it was from back in the early or mid 90s.)
The first one is her cover of "Most of the Time" by Bob Dylan. To intro the song she says something like "This is serious shit now, the banjo's out."
The second song is this concert's live version of "Do Re Mi" by Woody Guthrie. I know she's performed this song several times, but I love the way she does this one!
If you could help me out with either one (or both!) I'd be forever grateful. Thank you!!
Dec. 26th, 2009 @ 06:55 pm I can't believe I didn't know this till now...
Okay she's releasing another bootleg. I dont know if this is common knowledge or what, but I didn't realise until now. So yeah...here's the link...
Which has live versions of Fire Door, You Had Time, Overlap and Present/Infant which have never been released before on the Bootleg Series. Has anyone already got it?!? If so, what do you think?! I'm putting in my order as we speak! lol

Does anybody know what's going on with onherown.net?
Oct. 26th, 2009 @ 08:37 am Ani Weekend
I saw her on Saturday in Seattle and then again Sunday in Bellingham.
Anais Mitchell opened and she is absolutely wonderful, with awesome little quirks and beautiful voice/songs.
Ani was in top form! I've seen her a couple times before and she never ceases to amaze, but her Bellingham show was perfection for me. I'll try to remember some of the Seattle setlist:
Grey (in which she said it was "Seattle's hue"...so great)
Garden of Simple
Which Side Are You On? (Pete Seeger cover)
New Song (Just Me?)
New Song (If You're Not?
Hypnotized (i know she played this at some point; i think it was encore)
(i'm sorry I can't think of any more songs; my mind was just BLOWN last night in Bellingham, so that setlist is fresher on my mind! if anyone can post the official one, that would be great!)
Some highlights from Bellingham:
Red Letter Year
the song for Obama
Which Side Are You On
Little Plastic Castle
a Gillian Welch song, which she sang with Anais Mitchell and Animal.
They were in "halloween costumes" for the Gillian Welch song. Ani in devil horns, Anais in a pink wig and cowboy hat and Animal in an afro wig and cowboy hat.
Oct. 25th, 2009 @ 06:30 am more covers
I think, hope she will do more covers in the future. her voice is so amazing, so unique, it would make for some unbelievable renditions ... ex: some more dylan songs, maybe some early folk songs from feminist era in America. maybe no instruments at all, just her voice?

so, my husband i just decided that for our anniversary next august, 2010, we will go to Niagara Falls, on the U.S. side.
I figure we won't spend that many days actually looking at the falls, so I would LOVE to take a day and venture to Righteous Babe Recs and try to catch a glimpse of Ani's amazing little mecca.
Can anyone give me any advice as to how close RBR is to Niagara Falls and what a good day is to stop by, just to look?
Thanks in advance! :)
